Marshall Fields

There is a building in Chicago, Marshall Field that is a store. It is the best mall and store in the world. Marshall Field's architect is Henry Hobson Richardson. It was built in 1882 and finished in 1907. Marshall Fields features are Christmas decorations and clocks. It is located on Wabash and Washington. Marshall Fields is 12 stories high.Wow! The purpose of this building is giving Chicago food, shelter, and clothing. They also have a restaurant. Marshall Fields is the coolest building in Chicago.

 

John Hancock Center

Stroll north from the Water Tower and you won't miss the John Hancock Center. It was designed by Skidmore, Owings. It was built in 1969 . It is 100 stories high. It’s used for apartments and offices. The John Hancock Center is located north of Michigan Ave. The John Hancock Center is the 2nd tallest building in Chicago. I had a lot of fun learning about the John Hancock Center.

 

Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum is so cool. It was built in 1892 for the Columbian Exposition of 1893. It was built by Charles Atwood. It is located just south of Chicago & by Lakeshore and 57th. It is important because it is one of the oldest buildings in Chicago. Some of the exhibits are the Titanic and rockets. I really wanted it for my project.

 

Marshall Fields

Marshall Fields is the biggest mall in Chicago, and its architect is Henry Hosben. It was built in 1882 and was finished in 1907. Its features are Christmas decorations, and lights. Marshall Fields has a green clock on the side of the building. Marshall Fields is located on Wabash and Washington in Chicago. It looks as if it is 12 stories high! From when it was rebuilt very little changes have happened on the outside of the building and the inside of the building, the building is still very beautiful. The purpose of this building is that it gives Chicago food, clothes, and much more.

 

The Wrigley Building

The Wrigley Building is a chewing gum factory owned and named by Phil Wrigley. He also bought and named Wrigley Field. The Wrigley Building was built in 1919. It is in the city of Chicago. The Wrigley Building is located at 400 N. Michigan Avenue. It is also located on the Magnificent Mile. The architect is Charles Beersman. I would say the Wrigley Building is a historical landmark.

John Hancock Center

Sears Tower

Do you know about the Sears Tower? Well I do.
The Sears Tower is located at Wacker Drive. It was started in 1971 and finished in 1974. It was was designed by Skidmore, Ewing, and Merrill. It’s used for working and eating. The Sears Tower is 1,454 feet and has 110 stories. It is one of the tallest buildings. There are 7 restaurants. And now you know about the Sears Tower.

Marshall Fields

Marshall Fields is a very cool building. Marshall Fields is located on State Street. Marshall Fields was built in 1882 and finished in 1909. It took 25 years to build. The architect is Henry Hobson. The purpose for the building is to sell clothes and other stuff. The clocks weigh up to 16,000 pounds. At Christmas the flags are trumpets. Maybe if you are in Mrs. Beil’s class next year you may do Marshall Fields!!!

Museum of Science and Industry

The Museum of Science and Industry is an interesting landmark. It is on 57th Street at Lake Shore Drive. It was built in 1892. Charles Atwood was the architect. It was used for a museum. The Museum of Science and Industry has 2 million visitors a year. The round thing at the top makes it unique. I have never been in it. Have you ever been in it? I hope you have. Do you know why, because I am doing a project about it. I think it is a fun and cool project to do! I hoped you liked my story!

The Merchandise Mart

Did you know that the Merchandise Mart is the biggest place you can buy nice things, in the world? It was built in 1931 for Marshall Field! It has a nice style. A style that most don’t have, it has the “Art Deco” style. The Merchandise Mart is huge, it takes up two of the city’s blocks. Now that is a long building!!! It used to be used just to trade things, now you can work there and buy nice things there! If you want to find this awesome building it is between Wells and Franklin St. The Merchandise Mart is awesome. I hope you get to go see it sometime!!

The Chicago Board of Trade

Have you ever heard about the Chicago Board of Trade? The Chicago Board was built on May 4th, 1977. The architect was Holabird and Roche. The Chicago Board of Trade is located at 141 West Jackson Boulevard. This building is used for trading futures. There are two buildings. The one on the north is 45 stories high. The one on the south is 25 stories high. On top of the north building is a statue. The south building is a gray color. The north building is a lime color. I had a great time learning about the Chicago Board of Trade.

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is one of the coolest places in Chicago!! Navy Pier is located on 600 Grand Ave. Navy Pier was built in 1916 by Charles Sumner Frost. “The Pier” is 3,000 ft. long and 2,920 ft. wide. Navy Pier has a skating rink, a Ferris Wheel, an IMAX Theater, Children's Museum , and even McDonald’s in the future. Navy Pier also has a skyline stage, arcade shops, and Joe’s-Be-Bop Jazz Emporium. The Ferris Wheel was the first Ferris Wheel by Jon Ferris, the Ferris Wheel was about 148 ft. tall. “ The Pier” honors people in WW I and WW II. Navy Pier is my favorite place in Chicago.

Merchandise Mart

Do you want to know about my building, Merchandise Mart? First, Merchandise Mart was build in 1931. Next, Merchandise Mart is in the Art Deco Style. The people who built the Mart were Graham, Anderson, Probst, and White. Did you know that more than 5,000 manufacturers and designers display their wares for a store in Merchandise Mart? Merchandise Mart is the biggest wholesale building in the world! Merchandise Mart already had it’s first bath ever! The Mart covers two city blocks. Also the Mart is used for a market. The unique features of my building are all the windows. Merchandise Mart is located between Wells and Franklin streets. Now that you know all about my building, how about listening to other buildings.

Navy Pier

Navy Pier is huge, fun, and has a ferris wheel. This place has got it all! Like I said, my landmark is Navy Pier. It is located at 600 E. Grand Avenue and was built by Charles Sumner Frost in 1816. The reason people go there is for fun and entertainment. Navy Pier is 3,000 FEET LONG and has a ferris wheel, ice-skating rink, Imax Theater, and much more! Listen to these facts for more details. The name Navy Pier honors veterans from World War I and is one of Chicago’s most popular places. Navy Pier is a great place to visit and learn about. You got the learning in so now go visit it!

The Field Museum

The Field Museum is really big! First, let’s see where it is located in Chicago. It’s at 1408 Lake Shore Drive. What’s that question you just asked? That’s a good question. When does it open and close? It opens at 9 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. It was built in 1893, a couple of years after the Chicago fire. The museum is used for history. It makes it unique for its old stuff. Its architect is Daniel Burnham. The Field Museum is a unique place.

John Hancock Center

The name of my building is the John Hancock Center. It is located at 875 N. Michigan Ave. It was built in 1969. The architect was Bruce Graham. The John Hancock has forty-eight stories of apartments, twenty-nine stories of offices, a store, a hotel, a swimming pool, and an ice rink. The John Hancock is one hundred stories high. The John Hancock is the largest office and apartment building in the world. The John Hancock Is nicknamed “Big John”. Big John is the third tallest building in Chicago. If you do the observatory, you will go to the 94th floor. Oh! When you go on the elevator, bring gum, the elevator pops your ears. Hey! I have the John Hancock, you can’t have it! Get the uhh... get the Wrigley Building, that place makes the stuff you need to go on the John Hancock elevator.

Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain, this fountain is only O.K. Wow! Maybe not. It shoots purple water! Buckingham Fountain was completed in 1927. It is located in Grant Park. Did you know that Grant Park is actually the rubble from the Great Chicago Fire? Some beautiful dump! Edward H. Bennett was the architect of Buckingham Fountain. Buckingham Fountain is used for show. The cost of Buckingham Fountain was $35 million dollars. It sprays water 150 feet in the air and pumps 1.5 million gallons of water every minute! Buckingham Fountain is AWESOME!!!

Lincoln Park Zoo

Welcome to Lincoln Park Zoo, one of the oldest zoos in the world! The purpose of this fantastic zoo is that kids can learn, have fun and watch 2,500 animals either eating, sleeping, or playing with its toys and fellow friends. It was built in 1868 and the people that built it were Maurice Thominet, Edwin Clark, Skimmer, Merrill, and Owings. Lincoln Park Zoo is located in Lincoln Park and what makes it unique is that it is free, so you don't need to pay. There are lots of buildings like the Reptile House. It has 35 acres of buildings filled with animals. These are the interesting facts and history I learned about Lincoln Park Zoo!

Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field is one of the more remarkable historic landmarks. It was built in 1914 and is one the oldest stadiums in the country. The architect Zachory Taylor Davis built one other stadium, Comiskey Park. Wrigley Field’s original name was Weeghman Park. It was renamed Cubs Park in 1920, then Wrigley Field in 1926. Wrigley Field hosted three all-star games. It’s the only stadium in the U.S. growing ivy on the outfield fences. The scoreboard in center field is 70 years old. The Chicago Tribune owns Wrigley Field and they’re putting it up for sale. Wrigley Field added its lights in 1988. Wrigley Field is home of the Chicago Cubs, which is my favorite baseball team.

Marina Towers

If you want to learn about the Marina Towers, you came to the right place! They are located at 300 North State Street, right on the Chicago River. They were built in 1964. Architect Bertrand Goldberg designed the Marina Towers. They are mixed-use, residential and commercial. They take up a whole city block and are 61 stories tall. They look like corn cobs and are powered by electricity only. At one time the Marina Towers were the tallest buildings in the world. I hope you learned a lot about the Marina Towers!

Sears Tower

Would you like to learn about the Sears Tower? Well I sure do and I’ll tell you all about it. Did you know that many companies can work there? The Sears Tower was built in 1974. I also learned that it has 108 floors. It is located at 233 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois. The architects of the building were Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill. This building is huge. Did you know that it is 1,450 feet tall? Isn’t that huge? It is the tallest building in the United States. The last thing I know about the Sears Tower is that people can see the whole city from its skydeck. Hope you had a fun time learning about the Sears Tower.

My landmark is Marshall Fields, a very famous store. I have so much to tell you about my landmark Marshall Fields. You can locate my landmark at the corner of State Street and Washington Street. It was build in 1907 and the architect was Henry Hobos Richardson. It was designed in 1898. Its size was very enormous! My landmark called Marshall Fields is so unique because of the size, and it sells fantastic stuff like clothes, shoes, jewelry, and decorations, especially when it’s Christmas . Marshall Fields is used for shopping and shopping, and sometimes for food too. Other facts that I have for my landmark Marshall Fields is the corner clock because it represents the Loop. Wait don’t leave yet! I have more, one more fact that I have is Marshall Fields is now Macy's. so don’t cry because Macy's still has the same things. So I hope you love my landmark Marshall Fields!!!

Soldier Field

Do you know about Soldier Field? “No”? Good. Holabird and Roch are Soldier Field’s architects. Soldier Field was finished in 1924. Soldier Field can hold up to 100,000 people!! Soldier Field is located at 425 East McFeidge. I hope you enjoyed the things I told you.

U.S. Cellular Field

Have you ever been to U.S. Cellular Field before? I have and let me tell you some facts about my landmark. It is located on the south side of Chicago. It was finished on April 30, 1991. The architect was Hellmuth Ombata and the designer was Kassabaum. It is used for playing White Sox baseball. It has 40,615 seats. That's a lot! One feature that makes it unique is when you hit a home run, fireworks start popping out of the scoreboard. An interesting fact is that it was built right next cot the old home of the White Sox and they turned Comiskey Park, the old home of the White Sox, into a parking lot. And that’s all the facts I have about U.S. Cellular Field. I hope you can visit there!

O’Hare International Airport

Da, Da, Da, La yea! Here we are at WGN news! Have you ever wondered how O’Hare International Airport ever got started? First, it was built in 1963. O’Hare lies in the far northwest corner of the city of Chicago. The John F. Kennedy expressway cuts through the north side and links onto O’Hare. Did you know that 50 million people pass through O’Hare each year? It is also 1 million square feet. O’Hare is one of the busiest airports in the world! O’Hare is known for its many people movers. The terminals were made by Stanislav Gladych and the chief designer was John Novak. He made the complex in 1972. Airports are used if you want to travel somewhere on an airplane. It is usually called a hub airport. There are four terminals. The initials for O’Hare are ORD, because it was built on orchards. There are many food courts, shopping centers, and gates for all of the airplanes. I hope when you travel one day you will go to O’Hare International Airport. We are signing off from WGN news!!!

Wrigley Building

Have you guys ever heard about the Wrigley Building? Before I did this landmark, I didn’t know anything about my landmark, but then I got to know it. It was built in 1924. It is located on Michigan Avenue. The architect is William Wrigley, Jr. It has many offices because it is a headquarters for Wrigley gum. It is unique because of its triangle shape. An interesting fact is that it is the home of chewing gum. I hope you learned a lot about the Wrigley Building.

John G. Shedd Aquarium

The founder of the Shedd Aquarium is John G. Shedd. The Shedd is located on 12th Street and on Lake Shore Drive. John G. Shedd gave three million dollars to start building it in 1924. It was open for visitors in May 1930. Unfortunately, he died right before it opened. Animals and salt water were brought from Florida by train. The Shedd takes care of 25,000 animals and has the greatest variety of fish in one spot. In 1991, the oceanarium was built so penguins, otters, dolphins and belugas can live there. This makes the Shedd the biggest marine mammal indoor home. In 2003, the Wild Reef was built so 20 Reef sharks can roam. John G. Shedd gave us this gift so we can learn about ocean life. Come see us sometime.

The Museum of Science Industry

The museum is located on the south side of Chicago in Jackson Park. The museum was built in 1893. It was designed by the architect, Charles Atwood. This building was built for the World’s Colombian Expo. The Field Museum used it until 1921. Finally, in 1933, the Museum of Science and Industry opened in the building. The museum is huge! It has 3 floors, 350,000 square feet, and over 800 exhibits. It might take all day to look around! Some things it has are a submarine, an airplane, and a coal mine. It also has a giant doll house and a chick hatchery. The building became a Chicago landmark in 1995. More than 2,000,000 people visit it every year.

Union Stock Yard

Have you ever been to the Union Stock Yard in Chicago? Even if you have, I’m going to inform you about it. It’s located at 850 West Exchange Avenue. It was built in 1865 by John B. Sherman. It closed in 1971, but now serves as a tourist attraction. It’s a place where they had animals, such as sheep, cattle, and hogs, prepared for meat packing. It’s unique because it has an arch-shaped gate and brick walls all around it. It’s at least 475 acres large. The Union Stock Yard includes enough room for 25,000 sheep, 25,000 cattle, and 80,000 hogs! That’s a lot of animals! That’s what I learned about the Union Stock Yard during my research.
